About New Trier Federal Credit Union
History
Like many other credit unions around the world, New Trier Federal Credit Union grew from the needs of employees for a place where they could save together and borrow from their savings. In 1958, teachers at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka established a credit union that they operated out of a broom closet in the school. Similarly, in 1969, teachers at Evanston Township High School began their own credit union, the Evanston Township Credit Union. In 1984, these two groups merged to form the current New Trier Federal Credit Union. Since then, the CU has grown and expanded as it has added other similar membership groups to its ranks.
Frequently Asked Questions
A credit union is a cooperative that is owned and controlled by the people who use its services. These people are members. Credit unions serve people who share something in common, such as where they work, live, or go to church.
2. How is it different from a bank?
Banks and savings and loans are financial institutions that are in business to make a profit. They are owned by groups of stockholders whose interests include earning a healthy return on their investments. Credit unions are not-for-profit, and exist to provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and to get loans at reasonable rates.
3. Does the Credit Union have checking accounts?
Of course! Our Share Draft accounts work just like checking accounts.
4. What about a savings account?
In addition to traditional savings accounts, we offer 6- and 12-month certificates with even higher interest rates.
5. Can I get a mortgage from the Credit Union?
Of course! The Credit Union offers many different mortgage products to fit individual needs.
6. What are the current interest rates?
You can find up-to-date rates on all of our services here.
7. Do you offer ATM Cards?
Our VISA® Debit is an ATM and a debit card all in one!
8. Can I have my paychecks deposited electronically?
Yes, provided your employer's payroll department is set up for direct deposit. And you can have loan payments automatically deducted from your paychecks, as well.
9. How safe are my deposits?
Like other financial institutions, credit unions are closely regulated, and they operate in a very prudent manner. The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, administered by an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members at more than 12,000 federal and state chartered credit unions nationwide.
10. How long has NTFCU existed?
Since 1958.
What We Believe
We believe that people are more important than money.
We believe that this credit union belongs to the people who use it, not to the people who operate it.
We believe that regular savings is the best road a person can take to financial security.
And that credit is a useful tool or a deadly weapon, depending on how you use it.
Our job is to protect your savings, but at the same time put them to work.
We try, when we make loans, to meet needs and to solve problems, NEVER to exploit a member in order to make money.
We hold this–your credit union–and its great financial power as a trust, to be used for the good of all.
